Murky water sloshed through the gaps in the jetty’s 71IGmJ8tctL._UX250_algae-covered planks. Electricity ran down her spine. The victim’s torso was missing circles of flesh. Jess had seen marks like this before a long time ago. But that killer was already dead, wasn’t he?

When the lifeless body of a young woman is found washed up in the blisteringly hot back waters of a small town, Detective Jess Bishop knows for certain this isn’t the murderer’s first kill.

Two other bodies have been found, both bearing the same marks. Marks that strike fear into Jess’s heart. They are identical to those from a case she’s spent her entire career trying to forget.

As Jess and her team try to link the victims, another body is discovered, and they fear the serial killer is taunting them. They know it’s only a matter of time before he kills again.

As the body count rises, and the hunt goes cold, Jess knows she has to confront her past in order to catch the killer, even if that means making herself the bait…

One Helluva Well Plotted Thriller! 4starstr

This is one for those who like their murders gritty and don’t mind graphic descriptions. It is one helluva well plotted thriller.

First in a new series in what I understand is a new genre for author Kierney Scott, and it makes for compulsive reading. I love the lead character of FBI Special Agent Jess Bishop who comes complete with flaws and she makes for riveting reading. Slowly, bit by bit her history comes to light as the layers are peeled back in tandem with the case progression. There is plenty to mull over as you read on – this book is packed with information.

Whilst realising that the details are integral to solving the murders, for me personally I could have done without quite as many gory descriptions – but that’s just me. I have plenty of friends where that will be the big attraction! I tend to take crime thrillers as they come, rarely working out who did what and to whom but I worked this one out about half way through – it seemed so obvious to me and despite a few red herrings along the way I never doubted who the killer was. Unusually, I was right!

However, that said I would love to read more about Jess and her colleagues and will surely be looking out for the second book. As long as you aren’t squeamish, I would certainly recommend this one!

My thanks to Bookouture for allowing me to access an arc via NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.
